Hello Fresh vs regular supermarket shopping

This is my comparison based on the ingredients I have received with my Hello Fresh delivery last week –

[table id=1 /]

My conclusion

I paid $34.50 for my 3 meals for 2 people. The ingredients themselves in exact amounts would cost me $37.91. If I were to buy full packs of everything, starting from absolutely nothing in my pantry, I would have to pay $84.68. If I assume I have all the regular stuff already in the pantry and fridge, and am just buying a bit of extra for the particular recipe, my bill would have been $61.99.

It is great to be able to try new recipes, and Hello Fresh is the greatest and the best box for us so far. It is also very economical, if you are trying to make something new for your repertoire, and you just want to try out this box. My conclusion is that if you were to buy all the ingredients separately, you would have to pay almost twice as much, even when utilizing whatever you already have in your pantry. Even if you were to buy exactly what was in your box, you would still have to spend way more money than what you paid for your box. Ultimately, getting to try this box is a great bargain, though we did have to cook separately for the kids.

The only one con is that daily you would probably not make such a complicated recipe as the boxes suggest, or your might omit some of the ingredients, or settle for a cheaper protein, and tweak your recipe anyway by cutting some obvious corners.

We have received 3 meals in our box, and they have been great! Here are some of the pictures of the box itself –

We have made three meals. One was dinner on Friday, the second one was dinner on Saturday, and the third one was lunch on Sunday.

The first meal we have made was spring asparagus and shrimp risotto. We have followed the recipe as it prescribed, except our rice was a bit overdone. The shrimp itself turned out excellent though. I think possibly some of the best shrimp I have had at home. Probably because my husband was cooking, and when I cook, I often overdo shrimp.

The second meal was Saturday night, and we have made rosemary-walnut crusted chicken. It turned out very well. The flavors were great, the recipe was easy to follow and delicious. We normally don’t cook chicken breasts very often, so it was a nice change. Balsamic vinegar and mustard in this recipe definitely added a lot to the flavors. The recipe was pretty easy to make though, we will probably make it again. It seemed at first that the amount of chicken was very little, but really the portions were great in the end.

The third meal was steak sandwiches for lunch on Sunday. That was probably my most favorite meal out of all of the three meals, because the meat was succulent, and all of my favorite flavors were there – red onion, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar. We don’t cook with balsamic vinegar enough, and it was great to be able to cook with it and eat all this deliciousness.

After all 3 meals we had some leftovers, so we could even have somewhat of second helpings. The amount of food was really enough for 2 people, no more, no less. Hello Fresh recipes turned out to be excellent for our palates, very well described, easy to follow, and gave us restaurant level of meals made in the comfort of our home, for a small price.

I will be posting more pictures from these meals, as well as a comparison chart if you were to buy all the ingredients at the store, as to how much it would cost you later on, I am still working on comparing those prices. All in all, Hello Fresh is an excellent source of home cooked restaurant quality meals, and it seems that it is worth the effort to try it!

Hello Fresh delivery

Morning

Today has been quite uneventful. We had an appointment with my older daughter’s teacher at school in the morning. Then we noticed the baby had some redness in her eye, and so we had to set up an appointment for her and take her to see a doctor.

Later on in the day we have received our first subscription box through Hello Fresh. This is how it arrived.

The box contained three bags for each meal, and then there were three proteins under some freezer bags – we got shrimp, chicken and sirloin beef.

It was exciting to reveal what was in the box.

The amount of food in each bag didn’t seem like a lot. They put in exactly enough to make the meals – no more than that.

So far we have had one dinner made from the box. It was great. More posts to come on that.

Evening shopping

After dinner our kids went to prepare for their performance tomorrow, and we went to do some shopping. We bought some minor stuff, really not a lot, but it put more of a dent in my budget.

All I have left for the month of April is $118.61.

The good news is that April is 1/3 over in terms of my budget, so I don’t have to last that long.
